What are the main types of cultured pearls and what are their distinctive characteristics?
Cultured
pearls are divided into saltwater and freshwater varieties, each with its own
unique characteristics.
1. Saltwater
Cultured Pearls
(1) Akoya Pearls: Akoya pearls are one of the most classic
varieties of white pearls. They are usually round, with colors ranging from
white to cream, featuring a pink overtone and high luster. Their size typically
does not exceed 9.00 mm.
(2) Tahitian Pearls: Tahitian pearls are the highest
quality variety of black pearls and are commonly referred to as "black
pearls." However, they actually come in a wide range of dark, cool colors,
with greenish gray being the most common. Their size ranges from 8.00 mm to 14.00
mm (almost double the size of Akoya pearls). While they are most often round,
they can also be found in other shapes.
(3) South Sea Pearls: South Sea pearls are the largest variety of cultured pearls, with sizes typically ranging from 8.00 mm to 18.00 mm. These pearls are usually white or golden in color and are known for their luxurious appearance. Like Tahitian pearls, they are most often round but can also come in other shapes.
2. Freshwater Cultured Pearls
Freshwater
pearls come in a variety of colors and can have a metallic appearance. They
also feature a wide range of pastel shades, primarily pink and orange. Their
sizes and shapes vary greatly. Smaller freshwater pearls are usually non-bead
cultured, while larger, round freshwater pearls are often bead-cultured.
